EU Accepts Telecoms Package Provisions

Posted in Buyers + Consumers, IT + More, World Of Telecommunication on December 26th, 2009

A realignment of telecom laws has been accepted by members of the European parliament, which will significantly affect the use of internet in the UK. These are particularly significant, as controversies continue to rage over the justification for the stringent anti-piracy laws mooted by the UK government.

The anti-piracy laws aim at controlling illegal file sharing and downloading issues that are threatening profits in the field of creative arts. With this in mind, the government came up with the laws that allow for temporary disablement of user accounts if a person if suspected of any such illegal activity. This strong measure of disconnection will follow two warnings to the suspected offender.

However, these measures have been considered highly excessive and there have been numerous demands for a legal hearing to be made mandatory before disconnection. However, the recent Telecoms Package accepted by the EU now considers internet freedom a basic right for the individual. This may mean significant changes in the anti- piracy laws as well.

The Telecoms Package was favoured by 510 members of the European parliament while 40 were against it. The provisions herein call for a harmonisation of mobile broadband across member countries. The super-speed internet programme favoured by the Labour Government will also be boosted by these new provisions.

Measures will also be taken in accordance with these plans to improve coordination between the various regulatory bodies across different states and nations. By enabling the equal distribution of broadband spectrum, this package aims to make broadband more accessible to lower income groups.

GPS - What Is It?

Posted in World Of Telecommunication on September 8th, 2009

GPS, or Global Positioning System, is the latest thing in keeping from getting lost when trekking out to visit your Aunt Louise. Years ago you had to rely on landmarks, your handy compass or the guy at the corner gas station, assuming he knew where everything was. Today for about a hundred bucks you can get a little gadget that will tell you exactly where you are, any place on Earth. By using some basic mathematical calculations and a rather complex system, you can be in the middle of the desert, lost as can be, push a button and have your GPS tell you exactly where you are so that you can hopefully find your way back home.

So what exactly is GPS and how does it work?

GPS is actually a very complex and expensive system but the fundamental concepts of the system are very simple.

The GPS system is a group of 27 Earth orbiting satellites. Twenty-four of them are in operation and 3 are backups in case one fails. The system was originally created for the US military but was eventually opened up to everyone else.

Each one of these satellites, weighing in at about 4,000 pounds, circles the Earth at about 12,000 miles per hour and makes 2 complete rotations everyday. The orbits are arranged so that at any one point in the day 4 of these satellites are visible from any place on Earth.

The complimenting receiver that was created to receive signals from these satellites has the job of locating 4 or more of these satellites, figure out the distance to each and from that information determine where on the planet the receiver itself is located. It then transmits this location back to the person who happens to be in possession of the receiver. The operation is based on a simple mathematical principal called trilateration. To simply explain how this works, let’s say someone tells you that you are 10 miles from Newark, NJ, another person tells you that you are 15 miles from Maplewood, NJ and a third person tells you that you are 20 miles from Woodbridge, NJ. By taking those three facts you can figure out exactly where you are because each radius of each distance when linked together will intersect at only one point. That point is where you are located.

In order to actually do the calculation from space the GPS receiver needs to know 2 things. The location of at least 3 satellites above you and the distance between you and each of those satellites. The reason that only 3 satellites or spheres are needed is because the Earth itself can act as a fourth sphere. The GPS receiver itself works by radio waves which are a kind of electromagnetic energy and travel at the speed of light The receiver can actually figure out how far the signal has travelled by timing how long it took for the signal to arrive from each of the satellites.

In the next article on GPS we’ll go over exactly how this system works to measure distance.

Things to Look out for when Buying a Mobile Phone

Posted in Shopping Hall, World Of Telecommunication on September 4th, 2009

As a mobile phone user, you most likely feel overpowered with all of the changes that are coming about with mobile phones. Mobile phones are ever changing with new gizmos, services, and mobiles being released constantly. Do not get caught in a mobile phones trap, but become educated before you make your next mobile phone purchase. Below we have assembled some mobile phone facts each user should know.

Every mobile phone user often experiences the ‘race against battery life’ on their mobile phone. You attempt to use up all of the power there’s before recharging. Sadly, this may cause many issues with your battery later. Keep your back-light off unless you know for sure you will need it. This will save battery lifespan.

When traveling in areas where there’s no coverage or there’s only rambling coverage, turn off your mobile phone. The mobile phone uses plenty of battery power while making an attempt to find a network. Additionally, try and restrict your calls on your phone. The more you talk, the more battery power you’ll use.

When downloading Web features, games, ringtones, wallpaper, and screensavers, be certain there are no repeated charges. Though firms may not state it upfront, a few of these features have repeated monthly charges.

When purchasing a mobile with a one or 2 year contract or pay-per use agreement, be certain to read the small print. Weigh the costs of both types of agreements before signing on the dotted line. Consider the features you would like. With long term plans, you can regularly get more features on your phone for less money or as a bonus at no charge. Ask if all of your features, for example caller ID, will work when roaming.

When purchasing mobile phones online, be certain the phone is a recent model and carries all of the features you would like. Make sure you get a colour that you really like as just about any colour is available today, including purple mobiles. There are many online retailers where you’ll be able to find many brand names of mobile phones, a PDA, or other electronics at discount costs, for example Sony, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Blackberry.

Consumers Force Orange to Back Down on Price Changes

Posted in Buyers + Consumers, IT + More, World Of Telecommunication on August 27th, 2009

In a recent development, subscribers of service provider Orange went against its decision to hike prices and forced the operator to bring prices back to normal, thus showing how much subscribers’ opinions can influence an operator to make radical changes in its plans.

Unhappy customers of Orange took the matter in their hands when the company decided to increase prices on its various services including call rates and data access on handsets. The price hike was to such an extent that its customers felt cheated, because it seemed the company was violating its own rules and regulations. As a solution, a website called Bitter Wallet came up with some guidelines for the customers upset with the price increase, directing them to the ways of terminating their agreements.

As a result of the proposed price hike, there began a large scale exodus which only increased after the customers realised that their subsidised handsets need not be returned back to the company according to the terms of the original agreement. Initially, Orange maintained its stance on the price hike issue but had to finally give in to increasing public pressure and avoid further exodus of their customers to broadband deals from the other internet service providers.

The entire incident shows that just for having entered into a contract, subscribers cannot be taken for granted by companies that resort to unreasonable price hikes.

Make Traveling A Lot Less Stressful With The Right Type Of Car GPS

Posted in World Of Telecommunication on July 28th, 2009

Navigating using maps can be very frustrating especially if you are doing so while driving your car. This becomes even stressful when you are driving all alone in a strange territory. Sometimes, however, having someone with you won’t help either, because more often than not, your companion would end up confusing you more than helping you navigate the road.

But traveling need not always be this difficult. It doesn’t even have to be stressful. If you think it is the map that is causing you your problems, then better get away with it and throw it outside your vehicle’s window. Instead, go get a new car GPS receiver and use it instead of the map.

Car GPS Devices

Simply said, a car GPS device is a GPS receiver especially designed for cars and their navigation systems. Like all other types of GPS receivers, car GPS devices can also receive signals from GPS satellites and can use the information carried by these signals to determine its current location. But because they are meant to be used on moving vehicles, they must be stuffed with features specific to vehicle navigations systems.

In particular, car GPS devices must be able to give you the best possible route toward a particular destination. It must also be able to recalculate your route in case you miss a particular route instruction. It must also have a text and/or voice system for giving directions. Other basic features that all car GPS devices must have are:

• Map storage system

• Screen or display that can handle images of more than 320×240 pixels in size at a resolution and brightness suitable for driving.

• Address book for storing frequently visited addresses and points of interest

• Detachable or external antenna for better GPS visibility

Now, there are a lot of car GPS devices of different kinds and brands available for every type and brand of car there is today. Because of this, you may find it difficult to select the particular car GPS that would perfectly fit your needs, should you want to experience the functionality of one.

In general, however, you’ve got two options should you want to travel with a car GPS device. The first option is to purchase a vehicle with built-in or fixed car GPS system. The other option is to purchase a portable car GPS device suitable for your car.

Buying a Vehicle with a Fixed Car GPS Device

Built-in or fixed car GPS devices can usually be found only on brand new luxury vehicles. As such, you definitely wouldn’t see this option viable if you don’t have the cash to purchase a luxury vehicle. But for those who can easily afford one, this can be the best option because the GPS device is already integrated in the vehicle’s system. This removes all the hassle of installing the car GPS device on the vehicle and loading additional navigation software on the system.

Buying a Portable Car GPS Device

For those who simply can’t afford a new luxury vehicle but still wants to enjoy the functionality of a car GPS system, the viable option for him is to purchase a portable car GPS device. Now, for this type of car GPS device, you are again given two options: a portable car GPS preloaded with maps or a unit that would require you to transfer map data from your PC to the device.

Since the car GPS device needs to have a map in either option, choosing a car GPS unit preloaded with maps would seem to be a wiser choice. But while this type of car GPS device will save you from all the hassles of loading maps to the system, it also costs higher ($1,000-$1,500) than the other option.

The greatest advantage of portable car GPS units that requires map transfers, on the other hand, is their price, which would generally sell at the $500 to $800 range. Installing the system on your car, however, may be quite difficult and laborious.

Telecom Expense Management Important When Adopting a VoIP Wystem

Posted in World Of Telecommunication on June 8th, 2009

Voice over IP (VoIP) technology provides major benefits in both cost reduction and flexibility for mobile employees. But as is the case with any technology, different rules apply to how VoIP telephony is used and managed.

Collecting VoIP call detail records is a challenge, because the data differs from that generated by standard PBX calls. However, most companies want the ability to search call detail regardless of the technology that is used.

Capturing call detail records, both local and long distance, is important because it can be used for usage verification, billing reconciliation, network management and to monitor telephone usage to determine volume of phone usage, as well as abuse of your company’s telephone system. CDR’s are an asset in managing long distance telephone costs and aid in the planning for future telecommunications needs.

Telecommunications costs can also be easily controlled with CDR analysis by enabling businesses to:

* review all CDR’s for accuracy

* verify costs and usage

* resolve discrepancies with vendors

* disconnect unused service

* terminate leases on unused equipment

* deter or detect toll fraud of long distance services

* negotiate the most cost-effective call routing

VoIP systems typically do not provide the same level of standardized call detail essential to manage, report, and charge back for those services. Even when it is possible to capture some VoIP data, companies are finding that it is complex and difficult to normalize before incorporating the information for analysis.

For the best results, choose a call accounting software system that offers full call accounting and billing for Cisco’s CallManager telephony systems and other contemporary telephone systems.

Since call detail records, like those used with MegaCall, provide a reliable method of safely transferring information to call accounting or telemanagement systems, call record buffers have long been broadly accepted as the preferred storage device as a safeguard against cases of delayed call collection or communication failure.

The right call accounting software should captures CallManager data from the server as it rates the calls. The data is and accessible via the reporting system, featuring hundreds of reporting options.

Learn 1st Hand About Vonnage, Packet8, And Skype - The Real 411

Posted in World Of Telecommunication on June 8th, 2009

Whether you’re a current user of Vonnage, Packet8, or Skype VoIP phone services….or are just curious about them….a good place to learn whatever you want to know is their online discussion Forums. Keep in mind that each of these is company sponsored or influenced….so you’ll have to filter through some obvious biases and emotional attachments to get at what you really want.

If your looking for advice or information on set-up, trouble shooting, special promotions, company news, plan pricing, etc…..from actual users and company types…these are good resources. If you don’t mind wading through the frequent sappy gushings of infatuated fans…you can get some very useful pearls. Occassionally you’ll even hit on some eye opening honest assessments and advice too. Just look hard until you find something that fits your need. It’s there.

Vonnage Forum

It’s no secret that I’m not fond of Vonnage. I feel they’re way over priced, have built there reputation on a massive marketing machine vice a quality product, and their customer service sucks. But this is a pretty loyal and active Forum with a few very helpful regular posters. Better to get the scoop here than listen to that annoying “Whoohoo” jingle again.

Packet8 Forum

It’s also no secret that Packet8 is my favorite broadband phone service. Particularly for any business applications. Their frequent industry awards for business packages…such as the recent top nod for their Virtual Office IP PBX offering….sold me a long time ago. Their Forum takes an extra step to get into for registration but is worth it. The Forum contents are probably more informative overall about services, applications, and the parent company [8X8 Inc.] than the other 2 forums are.

Skype Forum

I’ve never been an advocate of Sofphone services but it does have it’s place. Skype is the hands down king here…but is far from perfect. Their “free” isn’t really free for example….unless those you’re calling also have Skype. Plus their business applications leave much to be desired. But their following are rabid supporters. Plus they have probably the largest share of the VoIP “phone” market worldwide…..especially in Europe and Asia….for now. Their Forum can be more Rah Rah than informational at times but is well worth looking over.

Now if you prefer a more open and unbiased community dialogue and Forum experience….I suggest you trek over to the VoIP Forum at DSLReports.com. It can be somewhat of a free-for-all at times. But there’s a ton of useful information shared on all kinds of VoIP providers beyond just the 3 mentioned above….as well as some links to useful tools to enhance your VoIP experience.

DSLReports.com VoIP Forum

There ya go. Between these open discussion resources you should be able to find whatever you need about VoIP phones … and the specific providers cited. Just keep in mind that it’s all other people’s opinions. The bottom line is that it’s YOUR opinion that counts most.
