There Are no Guarantees in Poker
Posted in Fun Links, Gambling Wheel, Internet Games on February 23rd, 2010There has been a lot of buzz in the online poker community lately about going pro. Everywhere you look there seems to be advice on going pro, checklists for what you need to make the transition, and step by step guidelines to leaving amateur status. What all of this good intentioned advice tends to forget, however, is that there are no guarantees in poker. One of the most popular strategies to decide whether someone is good enough to go pro seems to be to look at their big blind average. This is fine as a tool to establish your overall strength of a poker player, but should not be used to indicate future winnings. You can only analyze things like this by looking backwards at the hands you have already played. Looking at the past will not help you project into the future. It is impossible to try to predict what cards you will get or the table you will be playing at in the future. These are the factors that determine how much you have in your pocket at the end of the day, not how you played three months ago. My advice to you is to realize that you can’t find all your answers looking backwards. There are no guarantees in poker that past successes will be repeated in the future.
