Government Takes Serious Steps to Tackle Workplace Violence

The UK Government has made its intention clear with respect to its intolerance of workplace harassment and violence issues. This stand was made clear by Employment Relations Minister Lord Young.

The minister was speaking at the launch function of a new guideline to tackle this growing problem. The guide entitled ‘Preventing Workplace Harassment and Violence’ is the outcome of the combined efforts of several bodies like the CBI (Confederation of British Industry), the Partnership of Public Employers (PPE) and the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The Government backing to this presentation comes from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

Lord Young pointed out that boosting awareness levels of the prevalence of such issues would help employers understand and empathize with victims. This will in turn be effective in curbing the incidence of such unacceptable conduct. Employees also will be more confident as they will gain awareness of their own rights. All these will ensure better work environment and comfortable atmosphere for employees.

The guide is the result of regulations arrived at between employer organisations and unions, and will be applicable all over Europe to tackle the problem of harassment in all levels across all organisations.

Practical approach and easily applicable measures outlined in this guide will assist employers in ensuring that a congenial atmosphere is always maintained at the work place. By increasing the awareness about the existence of such issues among employers, the guide hopes to create a more empathetic reception to employee problems, whether created by co-workers or by third party elements.

Director of Employment Policy at CBI, Katja Hall, stated that workplace violence and harassment are serious issues that must not be ignored, for they can have severe repercussions for the victims.

All organisations need to make appropriate efforts to protect the well-being of staff, Workplace Law provide courses by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. The CIPD Certificate in HR Practice imparts training to managers to successfully manage appropriate policies and procedures and improve upon management skills to help tackle and reduce the risk of work-related violence.
