The Photographers Biggest Marketing Sin

Posted in Photographer's World on October 19th, 2008

How to stand out in the marketplace

There are only five ways to stand out in the marketplace:

1-Price, 2- Product, 3-Process, 4-Service and 5-Marketing Let’s look at these areas:

Price. If you compete on price you are asking for heartache and headaches. I guarantee it. Charge what YOU WANT, and find ways to justify it. Never stay stuck in the price war competition. It is very, very frustrating. I talk to many photographers who stay stuck and fail to work on other areas to strengthen. I believe it often is a sign of deeper problems and self -image. I am not suggesting avoiding it altogether, but it certainly is a prime focus for too many.

Product. I’ve always felt that if you can make people look good and create great photos they will tolerate just about kind of abuse or otherwise appalling behavior that would never be tolerated in other industries. If you are a great photographer why not be a great marketer too? And a good person. You will only have everything to gain by it and if you treat people badly, in time you are bound to pay a price. How exactly? Who knows? But why be a jerk? Likewise if you take okay photographs it will help you immensely by being a memorable person. I know average photographers who earn good money and get a ton of business largely because they are likeable. This factor really helps in this business. If you take okay photographs you should be personable and likeable, and you should create a lot of excitement with your marketing and ability to innovate.

Process. When you create systems that work, you become efficient. Use a system, do not take away from the system by letting employees change it or use their own discretion. A finely tunes operation will impress clients and you will stand out.

Service. There is ample opportunity for every business to become excellent in the area of service. It’s vital to create standards, and stick to them consistently. Use a process for the delivery of great service. One key area is training, and training staff often. They need weekly reminders of every aspect that you want great service to be delivered. Most business’s suffer from apathy in this area, so if you decide to be unusual, and offer great service, you will stand out big time.

Marketing. Let’s look at this one. Without a doubt the biggest marketing sin is being boring. You can have the greatest ad writing skills in the world but if your offers are boring you’ll likely stumble and fail. You can have the greatest photographic talent in the world but if your offers, copy and promotions are boring you’re doomed. Being boring in any way shape or form is considered marketing suicide. Maybe that’s why so business’s fail. Simply because they use boring, run-of-the-mill, seen-it-a-million-times, looks-like-everything-else out there marketing. I have no doubt that this is true and it is so often ignored by so many business’s it actually creates opportunity for those of us who decide to do something about it.

But first, let’s look at the obvious question: Why do we fall into the habit of creating marketing suicide with boring promotions, boring ads, boring offers, boring copy etc…in the first place….? Simple. We are human beings. We like to copy each other and copy others who we think are successful. We take on the “monkey-see monkey-do” way of thinking. It probably has something to do with peer pressure and other social conditionings, fear of trying something new or radical, fear of ridicule….whatever it is, the pressure is great. There are probably many reasons and ways of explaining it, and since humans are basically lazy it only compounds the problem.

This is a behavior that makes no exception. It applies equally to all industries and is so common it can be considered the true cause of failure. It’s what I like to call cannibalism. You see it everywhere. Everyone starts doing what everyone else is doing and we all start looking alike. What this ultimately amounts to is suicide because the marketing that results from cannibalism is so boring it has virtually no effect on that target group that we are trying to get into our studios.

Okay, so why don’t we simply take the opposite approach and copy the successful models such as Starbucks and The Body Shop to name only a few. The rules they play by are simple, but they did something amazingly simple that we too can us in our own business. They didn’t look at what all the other business’s in their industry are doing and duplicate. They didn’t go to a coffee convention and notice what all the other coffee places were doing so they could use those same old and tired ideas. Did they? As a matter of fact they did the opposite. They simply innovated new and exciting ways to sell their boring coffee and boring soap products. Think about it. They succeed, many fail. Look any other industry. Pick any and you’ll see the same behaviors over and over.

Strive to find your own voice and your own message. I know we are all selling the same commodity with our own style of shooting as the only way to differentiating from one another, but if we avoid cannibalism by not copying what all the other photographers are doing and by doing something totally different, totally outrageous (yes, going through the phone book and calling people cold is considered outrageous in my books…could you do it?? I’m not suggesting that we use that as a marketing strategy but as a source of inspiration, a guide post, a virtue, ultimately asking ourselves: do I have the guts, determination, discipline and willingness to stand above the crowd and not look like everyone else in my field?)

So how do we do this? Where do we start? Simple, take the basics and work from there. Your offers and packages in all your services should be exciting. Never boring, Start with your basic menu of services. If you are a “a la carte” photo studio then get off your high horse and create packages at different levels. Thinking is hard work so make it real easy for clients to understand what it is you are offering them. And please, don’t forget the golden rule: make all your offers speak in terms of how they will benefit the client (not an ego massage for you).

Look at everything your studio stands for. Is it unique? What areas can you improve? How about your personality? Your shooting style? Your skills? The studio smells? Your staff? Attitudes? Everything is a potential area for improvement and could be polished with that extra sparkle that you could call your own, not a copy of what you saw at the convention last month. Inject big and small ideas. Infuse personality into all your marketing, your personality.

Why do you think Wendy’s used Dave Thomas in their ads? Simple, sales went down when they stopped using him. He was a lovable, believable human being. Not a cold, corporate and sterile message like most ads out there. When you stop being a cannibal and stop feeding the same message over and over you start the right path to marketing.

You won’t find the answer in any textbook. However you can follow guidelines. The biggest job you have in your studio is that of being a marketer. A strategist first and foremost. Your life depends it and your business too. It is the only way to not becoming a cannibal.

I was once asked if location was important for the photographer. My answer was and is that location is a very, very small factor, unless you are building a franchise mall type studio and plan to expand it. This type of store depends on location to a much larger degree. If you focus on location and make it a primary strategy without making process’, service and marketing your main focus, you are creating a very weak plan.

Be grounded, realistic and focused on what is important and deserving of your attention and efforts. Your success depends on it.

Outdoor Group Portraits

Posted in Photographer's World on October 16th, 2008

What makes a great picture of people? Ninety percent of its quality lies in the
facial expression, the rest is composition, lighting, and the natural presentation of body language. A tripod is a plus for sharp pictures and the camera should be set at the lowest ISO speed.

I want you to picture yourself and your family outside on a nice afternoon. It’s Thanksgiving, a great day for a family portrait. Unless it is a cloudy day, some nice shade will produce a flattering lighting ratio for your portrait. This means that the brightest part of the picture and the darkest part are not too far apart in value for the film or hard drive card to capture. Then choose a uniform background for you portrait. A stand of dark evergreens, a barn wall, a distant lawn, or a high hedge are all excellent backgrounds. The back of the house and patio, the driveway with the parked cars, or partially sunlit woods are too busy a background for your picture.

Next find something for people to sit on: a log, a small table from the patio, a picnic bench or a patio chair. The object is to have everyone’s head at a different level. Small children are, of course already low to the ground. Seat some people at chair height, others on the ground. Sitting like an Indian is not a viable pose. Try sitting the person down on the ground with their knees together, ankles crossed and to the side. Standing and leaning against something also provides a different height for your composition. Try to place the heads so that they do not line up either vertically or horizontally. Rather than presenting a square shoulder to the camera, a slight turn to the body is preferable. Eye glasses can be held in the hands or tilted down. Be creative in you grouping - two, threes and fours in a close grouping look better than one group of seventeen evenly spaced. Remember to overlap shoulders so that heads are closer together. One shoulder is all that is necessary to see.

Arms should never hang straight down. Instead, place some hands in pockets, around shoulders or holding hands. Diagonals in the composition increase the dynamic qualities of your portrait. Pay attention to the legs and feet. Natural looking positions include crossed ankles, placing the feet forty-five degrees apart (standing), and crossed knees. After the positioning everyone, stand back and squint at the effect with blurred eyes. Turn any straight on bodies and relocate any misplaced color or glaring whites for a more pleasing effect.

A broad, low light source is ideal for a flattering look to your portrait. An open sky overhead will result in dark eye shadowing. Reflecting light into the shadow areas or using fill flash will correct this situation. Take advantage of the light from a white building or a setting sun. A natural solution is to place your group under some overhanging branches.

Center your grouping in the view finder, paying close attention to the edges of the finder. Leave a little space on the ends for cropping since the format of an eight by ten or sixteen by twenty photograph will crop ten percent off the ends. At the moment of exposure, do or say something to capture the attention of the whole group in order to coordinate the eyes in one direction. You can save a big paper smiley face until the last minute. The alternative is an interactive pose where everyone looks at each other, instead of the camera. This type of composition is more difficult, since facial profiles are less desirable. In order to insure open eyes, talk through the moment of exposure and for a good selection, take lots of pictures. Above all have fun and everyone will enjoy the experience. Happy shooting!

I did this for 30 years.

How to Use and Select Stock Photography Services

Posted in Photographer's World on October 16th, 2008

There are two main types of photography to sell, that is assignment photography and Stock Photography. Assignment photography is taking photographs of a predetermined event, and stock Photography is taking photographs in the hope that you will be able to find a future buyer. Most professional photographers take both types, the weddings and portraits take care of immediate bills, as they command a higher price, because they are generally only of interest to a limited number of people. There are exceptions like being hired for a specific assignment to photograph an Olympic Event, and then being able to sell that photograph Internationally. In general, stock photographs command a lower price, but they are more saleable to a wider base.

Stock photographs’ are generally sold on the Internet through what is known as “Stock Libraries”. They generally all work on a very similar system, you take photographs and submit them to a stock library and they sell them to interested parties such as travel brochure companies, advertising agents, book publishers. This way of marketing photographs has distinct advantages, if you are a part time freelancer, or have just started your own business. Either way you are probably too busy making portfolios, and taking pictures to market them. Another factor, which makes this method of marketing advantageous, is that when you are starting you do not have the network of contacts to market your photographs. Added to that there are some people who won’t or can’t perfect their marketing skills.

A downside of this marketing method is that there is a little more to it than taking photographs and waiting for the Royalty cheques to come in. Most stock libraries, will want to re-caption your pictures to fit in with their image, this can be a time consuming process and it can take months to get them online. Like many aspects of selling it is a “numbers game”, the more photographs you have available to sell the more you are likely to sell. This is a fairly general aspect of marketing, but it is more specific in this instance, as prospective buyers may look at other images, if they like one particular one. Because of the time factor of getting your work to the buyers or the public, many stock libraries, have insisted on a minimum contract, which means that they typically ask to retain your work for a minimum of two years.

Some of the stock libraries are general and some are more specific. Marine Themes obviously specialise in underwater photography, and they scan and correct all their images before sale. They are then color corrected to ensure that any prints will be the best quality. All this takes time, to get the images actually for sale on the Internet. The benefit is that marine photography is highly specialised, and this process does increase your chances to merchandise your work.

In the past the market was limited to buyers who were sent colour brochures and made their selection from them, now the market is expanding, as many libraries have widened their sales base by allowing customer’s to make their purchases directly on line. This factor alone has increased the numbers game the more people who have access, the more who are likely to buy. Some stock libraries are general and some are highly specific such as South African images. Some cover specialist areas such as marine photography, or nature.

So how do you choose the stock library that will be the most beneficial to you? There are independent reports covering the various strengths and weaknesses. The annual Freelance Photographer’s Market Handbook in the UK features a section on stock libraries and is an excellent reference guide. Some of the stock libraries have been established for ten years. They have hundreds of photographer’s and hundreds of thousands of images. As a result of this they may be reluctant to take on new clients. However if you have a large portfolio available immediately it may be worth trying one of the older companies. However you will be competing with established photographers who have built up a client base. Many of the new companies have less than a hundred photographers and you will start by being a bigger fish in a smaller pond.

At the end of the day, the choice has to be your personal decision, and there is nothing to stop you from registering with more than one library. Whilst the market is growing and will continue to grow to encompass on line sales, remember to consider that sales from a printed catalogue will be important for a while, and it may be advantageous for you to choose a library with a well referenced catalogue.

Every stock library has different terms and conditions. In general most give you a straight 50% of the earnings. However some do let the images go into the hands of “sub agents”, and they will expect an additional cut from any sales. Read your contract well before you sign and beware of copyright issues. Normally when the photograph is sold the buyer is issued with a license number, which only allows them to use the image the once. You minimise your royalties if you allow a buyer to pay once and then get multiple uses out of it.

All in all if you are prepared to look at your market strategy over a long period of time, stock libraries offer you an option. There are forums for professional photographers that do address the issue, and it may be worth you looking into othe peoples style and work. Here are some I recommend you look into and consider selling your stock through:- PhotoStockPlus and Photo.com

There are also available a huge number of royalty free sites. You may question why buyer’s would consider paying for an image whilst they can obtain other’s free? The answer here is that royalty free photographs don’t make them free, you do purchase them, but you have the rights to re-use the stock photos and CDs for as many different projects and clients as you wish without paying further licensing fees.

Choosing A Digital Camera Printer

Posted in Photographer's World on October 15th, 2008

There are so many types of digital camera printer on offer that finding the right one for your personal and business needs can be a very daunting task. However, there are a few main points to consider when choosing a digital camera printer that will help make the process a little easier.

It isn’t necessary to have a high-resolution digital camera printer to make great pictures. The higher the printer resolution you use, the more pixels you’ll need in your original image file to produce a decent size print with your digital camera printer. The actual file size (in pixels) of the image from your camera, divided by the printer resolution (in dots per inch), determines the final print size. So, if the image file size is 1,478 x 1,280 pixels, and you print the file at 163 dpi with your digital camera printer, the final print size will be 9 x 7.8 inches.

If your digital camera printer resolution is 300 dpi, then you will have a higher resolution with more dots per inch laid down on the paper but a smaller print size. It is therefore important to ensure that you have the image file size to support the resolution of your digital camera printer.

The price of a digital camera printer is lowering whilst the quality is increasing. If you choose the right digital camera printer you can have your own photo lab, greeting card designing and sign making department with just your digital camera, some software and a printer.

The aim of having a digital camera printer is to produce photographic prints that look as close to real photographic prints as possible. This type of digital camera printer was once very expensive to buy and run, but technological advancements and competitive pricing have made them much more accessible to the average buyer. Ink-jet printers are now available that can produce excellent prints and a near photo-quality printer is much easier to find for people with a small budget. You will probably want to have a digital camera printer with a scanning feature built-in. If you want to produce same-size scans of photos you don’t need scan resolutions higher than 300 samples per inch for the scanner.

Your digital camera printer should also have the same interface that you already have on your computer. So if you have USB, then get a digital camera printer with USB, a Firewire printer if you have Firewire or a SCSI printer if you have SCSI. There should be no need to buy a digital camera printer that requires a different interface to the one you already have on your computer or it will cost you more to upgrade if necessary.

The Age of Outsourcing

Posted in Great Software Tips on October 14th, 2008

In today’s day and age companies can ill afford to take on full time equivalent employees to manage functions which can be easily outsourced. In fact most businesses today, particularly in marketing, can not afford to keep a large marketing staff, but they still need to complete those vital marketing functions. Companies are going to a much more of a virtualized model and the fundamental relationship between employees and employer has changed. Companies are often using a make or buy criteria to decide what they outsource to other companies, and what are core competencies that they need to retain inside their own walls with their own employees.

The trend is towards strong rethinking of maintaining a large headcount in the face of stiffer competition, tightened margins and higher specialization of particular skills that are required in order to be effective in the sales and marketing mix. This is where a relationship with an outsourcing company becomes valuable. Today most companies can’t afford to keep positions like product marketing manager or product manager full time or they can’t afford to have a full time person doing search engine optimization on their staff, but they still need access to those functions. Outsourcing those functions to an outsourcing or inter-management company like ours is a perfect solution.

Many companies now look for employing sales or marketing specialists on a fractional basis. And so the term “fractional management” is now becoming more common as part of the lexicon of companies as they think about how to make sure that they’ve got the right skill mix in their company without necessarily having to employ those resources full time. Another perfect example of outsourcing is when companies need to do a product launch, or they need to do product management duties but they can’t afford to have a full time product manager that would cost seventy or eighty thousand dollars a year. A great solution to that problem is employing a fractional product manager for perhaps one quarter or one fifth of that cost and still making sure that vital product management duties are getting done inside your company.

These are just some of the examples of how companies can use fractional sales and marketing management and specialty skills to make sure that they have a complete capability inside their company without spending on individual full time equivalents or FTE’s in order to have those capabilities in their company. As virtualization of companies continue we see that this trend is going to continue to accelerate and Cube Management is optimally positioned to provide those fractional sales and marketing management services to companies that need to outsource.

Acrobat PDF and Web-based Forms Becoming More Popular

Posted in Great Software Tips on October 13th, 2008

Many of you have seen this cool feature in Microsoft Word documents or Acrobat PDF forms. It allows for users to fill out PDF forms right on their computer. For business this saves time, money, and duplication of information and effort.

HTML Online Forms

Many web sites have some type of form to capture and process information using a variety of mail form processing scripts.
A good example of an online form is the employment application. However, web owners should be aware of lengthy or complex forms that load slowly even over a high-speed connection.

PDF Online Forms

You should consider using a dynamic PDF form which can be constructed to allow users to type their information directly into the PDF. Once users access the form, you can provide two options:

1) Allow users to save the PDF document to their computer so they may complete it at a later time. Once the form is completed they may email it back to you as an attachment or print it out for faxing or mailing.

2) Require users to immediately complete the form. Once the required data is filled in, users can click submit and automatically attach the PDF as an out-going email without any additional interaction by the sender.

Saving Time, Money and Resources

In some cases it is advantageous for a business to receive important data in a formatted PDF form versus capturing data via a web-based form. Good examples of when to use PDF forms include: mortgage applications, employment forms, credit applications, membership forms, and medical questionnaires.

Think of the time and resources that can be saved when a perspective job applicant completes your multi-page online form in its original form. It also removes the guess work from having to decipher handwriting because ‘all penmanship talents are not created equal’.

You can convert most PDF files into a PDF Form. However, to do so, you’ll need to purchase and install a full version of Adobe Acrobat. All you need is a little HTML know how and a hosted web service account to get you started and you’ll be on your way to becoming an Adobe Acrobat Form Maker Pro!

Why Is Lead Distribution Important?

Posted in Great Software Tips on October 13th, 2008

Every lead that one may deal with is unique and should therefore be separately. Leads should be handled according to both priority and also time sensitivity. As a result, distributing a lead correctly from the beginning is paramount.

The most successful programs are very organized when it comes to dealing with different leads. Giving all leads the same amount of attention will not yield the best success. Instead, truly successful companies distribute leads in an optimized manner and devote varying amounts of time to different leads. For example, a higher-priority lead would be sent to sales immediately, and a lower priority lead would be sent to marketing where it would be addressed later. Companies with good lead distribution also have systems in place that inform the proper persons if a lead is not getting enough attention. Statistics have proven that many companies lose potential sales by simply letting leads go. Companies take every effort to collect leads, and so it makes sense that every lead gathered should be given the best attention.

Contacting sales prospects quickly and efficiently can have very positive effect on conversion rate. In fact, studies show that contacting a sales prospect within 30 minutes can increase close ratios by 40 percent. Solid lead distribution software can help a company beat competition to every sales prospect. It can also eliminate lag between lead reception, contact, and eventual closing.

Lead distribution software can also ensure that the right people are dealing with the right lead. (Bad things happen when the wrong company representative is talking to the wrong lead.) Companies want to make sure that leads are given the best and most appropriate attention. Software can delegate workers specific tasks to ensure complete efficiency.

As you have hopefully realized throughout reading this article, lead distribution is very important. To summarize, companies spend large amounts of time and resources gathering leads. Lead gathering is an investment, and so it should be followed up with the same amount of effort. Lead distribution can help companies follow up on leads by assigning specific leads to appropriate departments and giving leads the correct amount of attention. Potential customers are given attention based on their status of being hot, warm, or cold. In the end, the most successful companies will undoubtedly have efficient lead distribution software and therefore they can execute on these leads in a superior manner. The business world is extremely competitive, and in order to stay ahead of the curve, every company should strive to master the art of lead distribution.

James Hasson recommends Leads360 for lead distribution software.

Inspect to see if the merchant bank who is willing to give you a loan is proficient. Many of the moneylenders wil show you a rate that looks just but feels gravely or so after a period of time. 10.3 percent loan rate may appear so ok but will that be changeless after you have to repay your money loan. now you need to suss out and run across if you can have a money loan at a safe percent rate of interest.

A bank in Eugene Oregon or so may have a total different actual interest rate for a 10000 dollar deferred payment then a moneylender in Dearborn Michigan and that makes a huge clear difference in your yearly pay backs. It makes no difference if you live in Brownsville Texas or in Birmingham Alabama a effective online investigation will excuse you often lots of discommode. Nowadays you can suss out rates quickly on the internet and go steady if there are other conditions you should be aware of. You should be impertinent today to investigate if you have a great deal or if you don’t with the bank that offers you a bank loan.

How to Hide Secrets with Both Low and High Tech Tactics

Posted in Great Software Tips on October 11th, 2008

Civilizations have always tried to hide secrets from their enemies, allies and even trading partners so they could advance their political will, wealth or power over another, a peoples or an entire world. This should not be all that surprising to people at all. There are numerous examples of this and even to this day we see it in industry, first world nations and with world power brokers, spies, arms dealers, dictators and capitalists. And the hiding of secrets is so pervasive that nations have spies to uncover the truth often hidden in misdirection, deep underground bases and some out in the open to blatant that no one believes it.

Today nations like ours spend huge amounts of time and dollars hiding information using all sorts of tricky little tactics, most are well known. What are some of the ways to hide information, communication and knowledge from others to maintain control. After all knowledge is power and if you control the knowledge well you have all the power. Hiding information in symbols is an interesting idea and it is the same whether it is a book, ancient text or some other fashion if you are hiding it from those who cannot read the language or understand all the symbols you see?

Remember the Twilight Zone “To serve man?” Right now with encryption we hide things in symbols representing numbers; these symbols representing the human world’s definition of units or virtual units of a thing, many things or no thing. Certainly one can hide information in pictures like da Vinci or .pdf (Russian Spies). In recent past periods words like Nursery Rhymes told stories and gave information but it was hidden from the King and sung in the open all in the disguise of children’s stories. We too hide computer data in numbers. Previously we had for decades hidden secret communications and data which used de-coder and decipher readable machines during the cold war. Now we use 64-bit or 132 bit encryption for pass words and data. In the future quantum computing will blow that out. Or in shapes too:

http://ezinearticles.com/?4-8-15-16-23-42,-What-Comes-Next?&id=114966

Shapes and numbers or in light, you can hide information in light, atomic spin, frequency or patterns.

Indeed the best place to hide is in broad daylight, as the saying goes. “Trojan Horse Theory of course.” A lot can be hidden by simplicity and by generally applying Occam’s Razor and allowing your hidden message to be somewhat over glossed and with an alternate answer, which is more readily detectable, thus no one suspects a 13 move chess strategy to get you to your end goal, when there are obvious and normal explanations?

Hiding something in a virtual dimension of a quantum space is not so difficult and no one will find it unless you train your mind to see thru the clutter. And there are ways to do this and with proper training and education this can be overcome, so there is no information, which can ever be hidden, although some humans will not be ready for that, it is still better to move forward and train the human mind to see beyond. Recognizing patterns quickly can help the human mind to decipher codes and or create them, even build algorithms to detect them quickly. Think on the truth, which is hidden from view.
