Small Business Networks: Are Your Clients Using the Right Tools?

Posted in Market on June 30th, 2008

Since the vast majority of small business prospects and clients that you encounter will likely be running some version of Microsoft Windows, it is a good idea to educate small business managers on the differences between the “current” versions of Microsoft Windows.

Versions of Microsoft Windows

Are your clients using the “right” version of Microsoft Windows? Below is some lists of different versions of Microsoft Windows your clients may be using in their small business network.

Consumer products (Home User)

Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Microsoft Windows XP Home

Business Products: Desktop:

Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Business Products: Server:

Microsoft Windows NT Server 4
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Microsoft Server 2003

Eight 32-bit Microsoft Windows products have been used by small businesses since the mid-’90s — and that’s just on the desktop side of the typical small business network.

Managing Expectations

It can be very helpful to understand some of the main differences between peer-to-peer and client/server small business networks. If you want to close the sale and gain a profitable, long-term client, it’s very important to educate your prospects and clients on key terminology while you work to manage their expectations from the very first conversation.

Parents: Take the SAT Challenge!

Posted in Schools + Schooling on June 30th, 2008

I keep a box of tissues on the table where I tutor because,
as an SAT tutor and college application consultant, I listen to
high school juniors and seniors who are so overwhelmed
by college pressure that they begin to cry. Not just girls. Not
just Ivy League aspirants.

High school students are always convinced their parents
don’t understand them. This time the students are right.
Parents don’t understand because the college admission
process is so much more competitive than it was when
most parents applied to college.

These are the ten things I wish I could tell parents:

1. I am convinced that parents have to walk a mile in the
student’s moccasins to gain some appreciation for the
stress the students are under and to reverse the tension at
home. If parents will take an SAT practice test they will feel
some of the same anxiety, cringe at their results, and
discover that the test is hard. Instead of piling 25 pounds of
SAT study books on the desk, parents can commiserate
with students over missed problems. Parents and students
can become allies rather than adversaries as they face the
college admission process.

2. Hire SAT prep tutors who focus on the applicable
academic material rather than just the tricks. Increasing a
student’s academic preparation for the test in addition to
teaching the tricks increases their confidence on the test
and in the classroom; teaching only the tricks makes
students more insecure because they are relying on tricks
rather than on actual knowledge.

3. Have the tutors keep the parents informed about each
session so that the parent tracks progress with the tutor
rather than pestering the student for information.

4. Have the student try the ACT. All colleges accept it and
some students do better on it than on the SAT.

5. Make learning fun. For example, have the students
memorize vocabulary using the book Vocabulary Cartoons
by Sam Burchers, et al. Also, have the student do the
crossword and other word puzzles in SAT Vocabulary
Express, the fun book of word puzzles that will increase SAT
scores. I wrote it with Michael Ashley, a nationally known
puzzler, so that our students would learn to play with words,
an important skill for the new SAT.

6. Emphasize getting good grades rather than good SAT
scores. Bs in honors classes are better than As in regular
classes.

7. Hire an independent college counselor who will work
with the family to create a realistic college list, brainstorm for
essay topics, establish deadlines for the student, and check
all college applications. High school college counselors
are overworked and do not have the time to walk families
through the process.

8. Realize that the schools parents attended may not be
within reach for their child. The number of high school
students planning to attend college has increased
dramatically; the student may be well qualified for a
particular college and may still not get in.

9. Look for colleges where the student will thrive
academically and socially. Choosing colleges based on
their name recognition and prestige value is a formula that
will increase stress, not decrease it. Everyone else wants
to go to those schools, too, making them even harder to get
into; they are not necessarily the best place for the student.
Loren Pope’s book, Colleges That Change Lives, is a good
place to start.

10. Support your child through a difficult process. Leave the
prodding, nagging, and yelling to the tutors and college
counselor. The independent college counselor will tell the
student to work harder so the parent doesn’t have to. Why
ruin the student’s last year at home?

Parents can make decisions so that senior year is not be so
fraught with anxiety that family members begin to avoid each
other. And, I hate it when my students cry.

Not really sure which fruity lube to buy? The questions can be answered in this excellent lube article. Butt Plugs are always great fun with lube!

Lubes are not just for sexual intercourse. Getting lubed up for single fun is one of the most common uses for sex lubricants, sexual oils and lotions. Using lube during single fun is safe, tremendous and practical. One will want your sexual toys to enter and move as much as possible.

The human body needs to remove its toxic substance from time to time. Just like we take bath to clench our outer body, the same way we need to clench out those toxic substance from inside our body. This process of clearing the toxics from the body is called detox, short for detoxification.

Tips to Achieving a Successful Web Site

Posted in Web Tips on June 23rd, 2008

1. Choose a Niche - Today, anyone can have a website and sell merchandise or services on the internet. The choices are endless and only limited by your imagination. If you are already in a business and don’t currently have a website, then it’s simply a matter of deciding what name to chose.

If you are thinking about setting up your first website and aren’t sure what niche to chose, you might consider a favorite hobby. I’ve always liked to collect & repair antique radios, so I setup a website called http://RadioExchange.net

The fastest way to achieve success and a high ranking on the internet is to build a website around a theme and niche which does not have a large amount of competition. For instance, if you were to start a web hosting site, it would be an uphill battle because there are thousands and thousands of hosting websites already on the internet fighting to be seen in the top 10 or 20 listings of the major search engines like Yahoo, MSN and Google. The more competition, the more costly and time consuming it is to get your website seen.

I know of a guy who used to drive a van for a courier delivery service for a living. He started a expedited transportation website on a shoestring budget several years ago. Today his website is one of the most successful in the US for the expedited transportation industry. Another guy I know loved to collect scale model steam engines, so he built a simple website with photos of his collection. Before long, he started getting inquiries from other collectors as to where they could buy some like his and where to get parts. He began selling parts and hard to find steam engines to collectors around the word. He also added a paid ad section to his site. These are two examples of how you can turn a job or hobby into a successful, money making website. There are still many untapped, niche markets available. You can do the research on your own or a detailed report on 109 Untapped Markets is available for download. The price is only $33. and it’s well worth it. To get your report go to Niche Topics at http://UntappedMarkets.cashflowsystem.biz

2. Purchase a Domain Name - Think of a domain name which uses the words which describes your business or what you will be selling. If your domain name contains the keywords which describe your business, you may rank higher than with names which do not. For instance, if you are a realtor located in Orlando Florida it would be a good idea to register the domain name OrlandoFloridaRealEstate.com/net or org or Orlando-Florida-Real-Estate.com/net or org. A scientific way to determine the best name to use is to run keyword popularity searches by using Overture’s Keyword Tool at http://inventory.overture.com When you type in keyword phrases, the tool tells you how many times any given keyword phrase was searched across the internet for the previuos month. Once you determine the name you want to use, you can search to see if it’s availabe and register it at a domain registration / hosting service such as http://Website-Supermarket.com

3. Set Up Web Hosting - Web Hosting is what connects your website to the internet so it can be viewed by people around the world. Prices for hosting service range from free (I would not recommended a free service - you get what you pay for) to $39.95 per month which is on the high end. Some hosting companies charge a setup fee and demand a year commitment. I would not use any hosting service which charges a setup fee or demands a year commitment because there’s so many which does not. http://Website-Supermarket.com offers excellent hosting services for only $4.95 per month which includes 24/7 live customer service and no set up fee or annual commitment.

4. Design Your Website - If you have no experience or limited experience designing a website you can choose from thousands of professionally designed templates for as low as $20. at http://Website-Supermarket.com and they are available for immediate download. Just browse through until you find a template you like, then click “Buy this Template” and download to your computer. They also offer 1000’s of clip art and photo art ideal for customizing a website. Unlike many of the other template websites, after you’ve selected the site you want, if you need help customizing your template, they offer complete set up services to get you up and running quickly.

If you choose to customize the template yourself you will need web design software such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or Front Page.. You will also need image software such as Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks. A new alternative web development software which is rapidly become the tool of choice for Internet Marketers is XSitePro. To learn more you can visit their website at www.XSitePro.wsone.net .

5. Upload Your Web Site files to your Hosting Service’s Server - Most Web creator software such as Front Page and Macromedia Dreamweaver has built in FTP (File Transfer Protocol) capability. A super program I recommend for uploading and downloading files is Cute FTP by GlobalScape. You can download a copy from their website at http://Cuteftp.com It’s especially handy for managing several sites.

6. Submit Your Website to the Search Engines - I recommend Submit-It which is a Free service that Submits your URL to all of the major Search Engines such as Yahoo, MSN & Google. Their website address is http://www.submitplus.com. Also, don’t forget to make a sitemap and submit it to google. This makes it easier for google to index your web site pages therefore increasing your website’s ranking. Just go to Sitemapbuilder.net, type in your URL and their online sitemap program will create a sitemap for you which you can download and then upload to google. Complete instructions are given on Sitemapbuilder.net’s website.

7. SEO / Search Engine Optimization - This is the final step and an ongoing process to achieving success with your website. Search Engine Optimization involves having as many pages of articles and text as possible containing keywords phrases which describe what services or products you are offering in your website. You can get articles about almost any topic you can think of from many of the Ezine websites with reprint rights. Articles written about your niche on your website vastly increases the value and ranking of your site to search engines because they reinforce your keyword word count.

Another very important step is to trade links with other sites and get as many inbound links as possible. Publishing your own articles to Ezine websites will help increase your inbound links. I highly recommend the Article Money System. It’s comes pre-loaded with 163 article directory sites. For each article you write (if accepted) you can get up to 163 incoming back links to your site thus improving your page rank. For more info, go to http://articlemoney.wsone.net

You might also want to purchase links to your website which have a high Google PR. Link Directory Submitter is a software which submits your website link to over 300 directories, with more than half ranging from PR4 to PR7. For more info, go to http://LinkSubmitter.wsone.net

To learn more about SEO / Search Engine Optimization, just type in the search phrase “SEO” in your browser and you’ll find numerous articles and info to help you with this process.

Romantic Weekend Getaways

Posted in Travel Infos on June 20th, 2008

Romantic weekend getaways can be a second honeymoon or your first vacation together. When you don’t have the time or money for a long trip, try one of the following.

Luxuriate Together

Spending time at a nice hotel is the most obvious and common romantic weekend getaway, and with good reason. It is wonderful to be waited on and relax in a hot tub together. The best hotels for this will have a pool, a hot tub (preferably in the room) and even a lounge where you might be able to go dancing.

In Michigan, this might be the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. This is where they filmed the Christopher Reed movie, “Somewhere In Time.” There are no cars, so you’ll have see the island together by horse carriage.

Romantic Weekend Getaways - Outdoors

If you both enjoy getting outside, you may want to consider a camping weekend. Whether you want to really rough it, and put on the backpacks, or just rent an RV and find a beautiful park to visit, this is a great way to have some quality time together. Wherever you live, there are great outdoor destinations within a couple hours.

A great example is the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area, near Safford Arizona. There are two hot spring pools to soak in, and millions of acres of desert to explore. My wife and I loved collecting beautiful rocks together, and sitting around the fire with fellow campers each night. We also enjoyed regular soakings in the hot springs.

Doing Something New Together

It can be very romantic to share new experiences together. Even when things don’t go as planned, you are creating common memories that bring you closer together. Why not try something new this weekend?

An example of this could be mountain biking in Moab, Utah. If you live near Seattle, you might consider a guided climb up Mount Ranier together. If you are near the coasts or the Great Lakes, you could take a charter sailing or fishing trip together. Amtrak has some great scenic routes you could travel in a weekend.

Are romantic weekend getaways expensive? Sometimes, but the only requirement is that they are romantic. There is a way to get away no matter what your budget is. Why not start planning now?

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the U.S. and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. For more on romantic vacations, plus travel stories, tips and information, visit: http://www.EverythingAboutTravel.com

13 Resume Mistakes That Can Cost You The Interview

Posted in Publishing Management on June 19th, 2008

1. A BLAND OR GENERIC OBJECTIVE: If your objective could be applied to a marketing resume as easily as a resume for an accounting position, then your objective says nothing and will get you nowhere. An objective is NOT some required paragraph at the top of the page that is an exercise in 5 lines of job speak. It’s an actual and real description of your skills as they’re related to who you are and what you want. It should vary with the type of job for which you are applying.

2. BLAND JOB DETAILS: “Responsibilities included overseeing construction of 4 Hilton Hotels in Tri-City Metro Area, each 50 floors in height.” Yeah? So what? That doesn’t say if they went up on schedule or if you brought the projects in under budget. It doesn’t say if you took all four from site work up or if the guy handling two of the four hotels was fired and you were promoted to overseeing all four. Differentiate yourself from the others coming in to interview. If you don’t tell the hiring company how you will be an asset to them, how will they know?

3. WHO’S THE MYSTERY COMPANY?: Don’t assume the name and purpose of your company is common knowledge. If it’s a competitor, it might be, and if it’s in the same industry and located nearby, it might be. To be on the safe side, provide a sentence or two about the focus of your company’s products or services.

4. ANOTHER JOB, ANOTHER PARAGRAPH: Don’t keep adding on to your resume job after job, year after year. By the time you’re in your 40s, you need to have weeded out some of the earlier stuff. You don’t need all the college activities, just your degree. You don’t need ALL 5 bullets for each of your first two jobs.

5. REFERENCES: Shouldn’t be listed on your resume. “References available on request” is the proper phrase. You present them separately when they’re requested. This isn’t about protocol. This is about protecting your references so they aren’t called until you and the company are serious about each other.

6. IT’S NOT A STORY!: Don’t - whatever you do, DON’T - write your resume in the third person!

7. SKIP THE PERSONAL INFO: You might think your weekend baseball coaching or your church choir participation shows you’re an interesting and well-rounded person, but they’re irrelevant. If the interviewer wants to know who you are as a person, aside from the job interview and your qualifications, he’ll ask.

8. DEGREE DATE: No matter how old you are, don’t leave the date of when you were graduated off your resume. It looks like you’re hiding something (well, you are, aren’t you?), and then everyone counts the years backwards and tries to figure out how old you are. Sometimes you can be ruled out - just for leaving the date off. If you’re trying to hide your age by not stating the date, what else might you not be forthcoming about?

9. SPELL CHECK, SPELL CHECK, SPELL CHECK: Spell checking visually by you AND someone else, any fewer than three times, isn’t enough. And don’t forget to check your punctuation.

10. GETTING YOUR RESUME OUT THERE - part one: Don’t use one of those resume blaster things. Half those sites aren’t even valid. You don’t know how it will come out on the other end. You don’t even know where it’s going or if the landing targets are employment related. It’s bad form and just….NOT the way to find your perfect job. Finding your perfect job takes focus, attention, detail, individuality, tailoring, specifics. Resume blasting is about as far from that as you can get.

11. GETTING YOUR RESUME OUT THERE - part two: If it’s an ad, you probably have instructions as to how to send it. If it says email, cut and paste it in the form, AND attach it. You never know what it can look like on the other end because of the variety of settings available to each user. Quite frankly, you’re better off not emailing it at all, because it usually just goes into cyber space, and then it’s all about the hiring company - but unfortunately, besides not sending it at all, sometimes that’s your only choice. Emailing your resume takes any option for further participation right out of your hands, because often there’s not even a name given for a follow up contact. You’ve no other option than to wait and wonder. (And half the time it’s going to HR or an admin department to be scanned into an electronic database.)

12. GETTING YOUR RESUME OUT THERE - part three: If you know the company, call and ask if they prefer email, fax, or snail mail. I know a recruiter who never even opened his email. Because he was listed in The Kennedy Guide to Executive Recruiters, he received so many resumes emailed to him cold (so NOT pro-active) that he just did a mass delete every morning. Candidates contacted for a specific search were requested to snail mail their resume to him. How about that? I’ll bet less than 10% of those who emailed their resumes even bothered to follow up to see if it was received (this isn’t a numbers game).

13. RESUME VISUALS: Ivory paper. Black ink. Individual pages. No plastic, 7th grade, science report cover with the plastic slider or metal push down tabs. Your name centered at the top, not on a cover page that says “Introducing Clifton Lewis Montgomery III”. No exceptions. Your resume is a professional document, not a school book report or an art project. Until every resume is done this way, yours will still stand out in the crowd.

You are the product, and your resume is the marketing piece. To find your perfect job you must differentiate yourself from the other people who will be interviewed.

Your resume must be specific, individualized, easy to skim so it invites a closer reading, and focused on the differences you’ve made with your previous companies, as well as the accomplishments you’ve achieved with - and for - them. This tells the hiring company what you can do for them - and it IS about the hiring company, not you.

Of course this assumes you meet the requirements for the job - otherwise it doesn’t matter how good your resume is! The resume is what gets you in the door. If your resume is poorly written, looks sloppy, is difficult to read, is cryptic in any way, or necessitates being slogged through to learn your information (they won’t bother), you won’t even get in the door. And how can you decide whether you like the company, if they’ve already decided they don’t like you?

I Want to Start a Truck Detailing Business

Posted in Road Trippers on June 19th, 2008

If you love trucks and 18 Wheelers then perhaps you might like to get into the truck detailing business. It may sound kind of funny to detail a big rig like you would a car, but believe it or not it can be lucrative business.

It will not be an easy business due to the size and shape of the vehicle, but there are a lot of trucks on the road and they need to be cleaned. There are two types of truck detailing customers for a truck detailing business; there is the long haul independent truck driver like B.J. and The Bear and there is the used wholesale truck detailing customer who owns a truck lot with either new or used trucks or sometimes both.

The independent truck driver is a dying breed however, they will spend big bucks to have their aluminum fuel tanks polished and all the chrome shinning. The truck dealer customer is much different as they are looking for a lowball price and will send you a ton of work. They need those trucks looking good to put on their truck sales lot so they sell fast. They may bring you three to six trucks a day if it is a high-volume truck dealer.

These customers will want the interiors claimed, the chassis degreased and the paint to look brand-new. They will also want the aluminum and chrome to shine like there is no tomorrow. But for this you can charge them $600 and now you are starting to see why the truck detailing business can be so lucrative. But be forewarned it is not an easy business as it is quite labor-intensive. Nevertheless a truck detailing business makes the top 10 list of small businesses you can start in trucking. So, consider this in 2006.
